Founders fight a daily battle.
Steven Pressfield calls it resistance in his great book, “The War of Art.” It’s the invisible force that keeps you from doing your most important work. Resistance shows up as procrastination, fear, self-doubt, and excuses.
In my book, ‘Loving Your Business,’ I describe how to manage your mind and overcome the universal experience of resistance.
Resist the lure of busywork.
You know what I mean. The things you do to avoid doing the hard things. Like checking email or the news instead of productizing your services or creating the plan to scale your business.
Here’s how to overcome resistance:
1. Show up like a pro.
Pros don’t let the day run them. They prioritize activities that increase the value of their business. Instead of getting lost in doing detailed client work, focus on creating repeatable systems that scale without you.
2. Feel the fear and do it anyway.
Discomfort is a positive sign. It means you’re stretching. The minute you notice the habit of “hesitate to delegate,” use that as your cue to empower your team.
3. Think like an investor, not an operator.
Investors don’t get stuck in day-to-day. They evaluate risks, set strategy, and make decisions that increase value. Moving from operations to oversight might feel risky, but it’s better for you and it’s better for your business.
Own your role as the leader.
Do what matters.
