The Cost of Immediate Relief

You’re not doing it on purpose.

That’s the thing about automatic patterns. You’re not dumb, lazy, or weak.

You’re doing what we do instinctively under pressure: looking for the fastest exit from an uncomfortable feeling.

The problem is the exit has a toll. Two of them, actually.

There’s the cost of the feeling you’re trying to escape, and the cost of delaying the life you want.

Deep Down, You Know

When someone on your team makes a mistake, you know the best response is to let them fix it and improve the process.

It’s better for their growth and the long-term health of your business.

But you feel anxious. You worry what the client will think. It’ll take longer for them to do it anyway. So you fix it yourself.

The anxiety stops, and you’ve just told your future self, the one who has a business that runs without you, to keep waiting.

When you planned to work until 5 but it’s now 8, you know you should stop. Your body and mind need the break.

But your company represents you. The voice in your head whispers if you stop, it could all disappear: the business, the lifestyle, your significance. So you keep going. At least you feel like you’re earning your success.

Your future self is still waiting for the day you realize your worth isn’t measured by output.

When you can’t sleep because you’re replaying that awkward conversation, you know you should let it go. The conversation is over, the other person isn’t here, and nothing is changing.

But you tell yourself you’re processing it, learning from it. So you keep turning it over, wondering what they really meant, imagining what you should’ve said, regretting what you did say.

Morning comes and you’re too exhausted to deal with it at all. Your future self knows ruminating isn’t problem solving, and doesn’t waste the time.

What We Trade

I’ve lived through each of these examples many times, and so have the founders I’ve worked with. What they have in common is the double price.

There’s the price you pay in the moment. And there’s the price you pay in the long run.

Because these automatic reactions keep you from becoming your future self, the version of you that you most want to become.

Really, all you’re doing is exchanging one bad feeling for another.

When I felt anxious and fixed people’s mistakes, I traded anxiety for overwhelm.

When I felt unsettled and kept working, I traded uncertainty for exhaustion.

When I felt inadequate and ruminated, I traded insecurity for suffering.

And I ended up resenting my business for making me feel that way.

Even though the business wasn’t literally doing anything to me. I was the owner and the patterns were mine.

Breaking the Cycle

The moment you’re triggered, you have a choice: react automatically or respond intentionally.

You’re not choosing between good behavior and bad behavior. You’re choosing between immediate relief and the life you want.

And when you’re under pressure, immediate relief usually wins.

Unless you slow down long enough to remember you have a choice.

Some part of you is ready to stop reacting on autopilot and choose a better response. It’s why you read content like this.

That part doesn’t need a protocol or a plan. It needs a pause.

Just long enough to notice what’s happening, see the price you’re paying, take a breath, and ask what your future self would do.

Instead of ruminating, write down anything actionable, then move on.

Instead of fixing their mistakes, let them correct them and grow.

Instead of overworking, stop when you said you would.

Then comes the real work: staying with the discomfort of the new choice long enough for it to become a habit.

Founders do hard things. This is one of them.

I know you can do it.

Your business reflects your level of consciousness. Once you become aware of the way your inner and outer experience is connected, you can create any reality you choose. If you’re ready to evolve, schedule 20 minutes with me.
